NC REAL Training: Jumpstart Your Small Farm BusinessNC REAL, a non-profit dedicated to assisting the development of small businesses in North Carolina is offering a class on developing and managing a small farm or agricultural business at the Madison campus of A-B Tech.
This course is designed to strengthen the business literacy of area farmers to help them develop and manage a profitable, environmentally sound small farm or agricultural business. The course uses hands-on experiential teaching techniques and provides opportunities for consultation with instructors and guest speakers from the academic, small business, environmental, and agricultural sectors.
The course provides intensive, interactive, professional-level small business and technical training to develop specific critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for successful entrepreneurship. Emphasis is placed on market research, financing, time management, and the day-to-day activities of owning/operating a sustainable farm as a competitive, small business. Upon completion, the participants should be able to write and implement a viable business plan and apply for financing for an agricultural enterprise.

February 8 & 22, 10:00a.m. - 4:00p.m.: Natural Products Business - Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Herbal Dietary Supplements, Enka Campus, Instructor: Sarah Schober, Course #SEF-2043-100, Registration fee $200.00, Class Description: This course will provide an introduction and a "how to" program for implementation of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) GMP in the CFR (Code of Federal Regulation) 21 Part 111. This regulation establishes requirements for companies involved with the manufacturing, packaging, labeling and holding of dietary supplements. Topics covered will include methods of botanical identification, terminology included within this code and the necessary documentation to support the packaging and quality control of herbal dietary supplements. Required documentation record examples will include MMRs (Master Manufacturing Records), BPRs (Batch Process Records) and SOPs (Standard Operation Procedures). Generic templates for this documentation will be provided and each student will prepare an herbal tincture following GMP procedures and documentation.

BioBusiness Center Winter Classes at Piedmont and Isothermal Community CollegesThe BioBusiness Center is partnering with other colleges to offer more classes around the Western North Carolina community. Classes are currently scheduled at Piedmont Community College in Roxboro and at Isothermal Community College in Spindale. The BioBusiness Center has already provided well-attended classes at Wilkes Community College, with more to come. The December Herbal First Aid class was canceled due to winter weather.
