Call for Instructors: Building Operator Certification

BOC is a competency-based training and certification for building operators offering improved job skills and more comfortable, efficient facilities. The training helps building operators identify and implement energy savings opportunities as an integral part of their operation and maintenance activities. A-B Tech is the administrator of BOC in North Carolina, and is seeking qualified instructors for individual one-day and two-day classes in a variety of topics on building-related systems and equipment. Instructors are asked to use BOC-developed curriculum materials, administer BOC tests, and serve as a representative of the program during the course session. Participating NC community colleges provide reimbursement for instructional services at competitive rates. Opportunities to instruct in the BOC program range from two to ten classes a year offered across the State of North Carolina.

Topics include:

BOC 101 – Building Systems Overview
BOC 102 – Energy Conservation Techniques
BOC 103 – HVAC Systems and Controls
BOC 104 – Efficient Lighting Fundamentals
BOC 105 –
Operation & Maintenance Practices for Sustainable Buildings
BOC 106 – Indoor Air Quality
BOC 107 – Facility Electrical System

Minimum instructor qualifications include:

  • Three or more years experience providing instruction to working professionals in the field of commercial building energy management, facility management, building engineering, operations and maintenance, or a closely related field.
  • Two or more years employment in the field or industry related to the training topic(s) for which the applicant is seeking qualification (e.g., HVAC systems, electrical systems, indoor air quality, etc.).
  • A bachelor's degree. (Note: Work experience may be substituted for degree. One year of work experience in instruction or industry is equivalent to one year of college degree work.)
  • Two or more references NEEC may contact who have observed the applicant provide instruction.
  • Familiarity with codes and standards in North Carolina relevant to the training topic for which the applicant is seeking qualification.
  • Familiarity with the building systems and equipment typical of commercial buildings in North Carolina

If you are interested in being considered for BOC instruction, please save, complete and submit the INSTRUCTOR APPLICATION linked at the bottom of this post. Upon pre-qualification as a BOC instructor, you will be invited to attend a two-day orientation session to familiarize you with the program objectives, role of instructors, and curriculum materials. The Northwest Energy Efficiency Council (NEEC) will have final authority over instructor approval. Only NEEC approved instructors are permitted to teach courses that qualify participants toward Building Operator Certification.
