Green business habitat in the NC mountains

School systems in western NC are leading by example by implementing energy efficiency measures at their facilities.

A recent article on BlueRidge.com highlights the work of Henderson County School system to conserve energy and implement other energy efficiency measures. The article "School system saves thousands on energy" notes that school system took initial steps toward savings by simply tracking energy usage and bills -- what a great way to start saving energy, by understanding usage and expenses! "The district hired an energy manager, Dave Lyons, on June 8, 2009, and started keeping records regarding usage and costs from June 1, 2009, to the present."

Back in August, the Asheville-Citizen Times noted that the Asheville City and Buncombe County schools have taken great strides... - "An energy audit of the Asheville City Schools system found more than 60 low- or no-cost projects that could save the school system more than $65,000 and save more than 880,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions." More great work is taking place through the Asheville City and Buncombe County School systems' Reading Riding Retrofit project which was recently awarded one of the EPA's Climate Showcase Communities grant

I give these school systems an A+ for leadership in energy efficiency. Keep up the great work!

Anyone else have news to share about energy efficiency in schools?
